To the Editor:
The Governor’s Opener Committee in Luverne sincerely commends everyone who took part in the Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Opener on October 12-13, 2018.
It was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate and promote the economic benefits and strong heritage of pheasant hunting in Rock County.
Many do not stop and think about how hunters give back by shopping at our local retailers, eating at restaurants, getting gas and snacks at convenience stores, filling our local hotels, and everything in-between.
Our committee hosted over 225 participating media and non-media guests over the weekend. According to Hunting Works For Minnesota, hunters in our state help create over 12,400 jobs and have a $1.3 billion ripple effect on our state’s economy.
Hunters — through buying their hunting licenses, stamps and fees, plus the 11 percent federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition — help pay for conservation efforts and habitat that benefit hunted and non-hunted game alike.
We are grateful for everyone who worked, participated in and supported this year’s Governor’s Pheasant Opener. And a very special note of gratitude goes out to the landowners and hunters for giving back to our local economy and conservation.
