To the Editor:
June 5 was a beautiful day for a picnic, and around 50 people with disabilities and their support people enjoyed the annual Arc/People First picnic in the park on North Blue Mound Avenue in Luverne. To make a beautiful day perfect, the Arc received a generous donation from the Neighborhood Club to fund a camper.
When the Arc began over 60 years ago, a week at camp was the only respite families had and the only opportunity people with disabilities had to enjoy time away from family with friends. It was the highlight of the year. The Arc along with community members and the Red Arrow Campaign have made tremendous progress, and people with disabilities now live and work in their communities. Camp is still a favorite activity.
Thank you to the Neighborhood Club, the Red Arrow group and Bernadine Merrill for making such a difference in the lives of people with disabilities for so many years. Special thanks to Lisa Turbes and Brenda Schultz for supporting our People First groups, and a sincere thanks to all the direct support workers who transport and support self-advocates in all that they do. We appreciate all of you.
