With a can't-beat-them, join-them attitude, go ahead and play with your food

It seems that summertime is (finally) upon us! The rhubarb is prolific, blueberries and strawberries are available and delicious, my kids are in shorts every day, and barefoot whenever possible. Who am I kidding, so am I!
As the kids have been home for a few weeks already, and can expect to return to school in August, a little summer craziness has begun. The boys consulted their Book of Experiments (that I was likely ill-advised to purchase), and found that they could experiment with different egg protection techniques, and then throw said egg from great heights. Of course, the one whose egg “survived” won. The boys drew faces on the eggs and named them. Sigh. Zach named his egg “Cuddles.” I’ll just leave that one there for you.
To make a short story long, Zach’s egg, umm, survived. In fact, Cuddles survived. Which meant that Zach then wanted to love and squeeze Cuddles as a pet. Of sorts. And we all know what happens to eggs that are left unrefrigerated after the experiment is complete. Don’t we? It appears I may have performed an experiment or two of my own …
Anyway, we decided that it would be a shame for Cuddles to suffer such a fate. I mean, poor guy, to go rotten and go to waste like that would be a shame. Not fair to happen to such a good egg.
So we ate Cuddles for lunch, boiled, with toast. Blueberries on the side. He was delicious. I mean it was delicious.
And the moral of this story? Play with your food, of course! I anticipate it will happen with or without my approval anyway. And as all moms know, in summertime, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.
For other ways to play with food, look to Pinterest for inspiration. Literally search “play with food,” and peruse the possibilities. Oranges made into snails (without the need for fancy equipment or any time at all), toast made into monkey faces, and apple wedges made into cars. It could make a finicky eater less reluctant to try new, healthy foods!
