The earthen abutment flanking the south side of the dam on lower Mound Creek was destroyed during an 11-inch rain and flood that hit the park on the weekend of June 14. Park officials said the dam was not destroyed by the overflow of Mound Creek, but by massive amounts of water sent toward the dam by a concrete spillway from the south side. They said if the dam is repaired or replaced the process could take years.
Blue Mounds State Park reopened to hikers, bikers and campers Monday, July 14, but they will have to enjoy the park without the swimming beach and a portion of Mound Creek Trail.
