Hills-Beaver Creek School District will welcome a new elementary school principal in the fall. Jason Phelps of Luverne accepted the vacant principal position for the 2014-15 school year.
Phelps, who is originally from Westbrook, lives in Luverne with his wife, Summer, a teacher in Garretson, S.D. They have a two-year-old daughter, Harper, and are expecting their second child later this month.
Phelps has been teaching social studies at the Luverne Public Schools for the past fifteen years in both high school and middle school. He came to Luverne right from college.
Aside from teaching at Luverne he coached the LHS girls’ basketball team for 10 years and has been doing the summer recreation program the past four years.
He studied a year at Minnesota West in Worthington and four years at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., for his undergraduate degree, at the University of Sioux Falls for his master’s degree, and he just finished his principal licensing at Saint Mary’s University in September 2013.
“I always enjoyed education and the academic environment. My father and grandfather were both teachers and I believe in the value of public education,” Phelps said.
Phelps is looking forward to working with the students and staff in the Hill-Beaver Creek School District during the 2014-15 school year.
“I’m looking forward to helping the students at H-BC reach their best possible academic potential. I look forward to developing new relationships with the students, staff, community and parents. I would like to help kids build a foundation for moving on to high school and beyond. Most of all, I am looking forward to working hard to make H-BC Elementary a place where students are excited to learn,” Phelps said.
Phelps enjoys golfing, reading, watching “Dora the Explorer,” basketball, fantasy football and the Vikings and Gophers teams.
