H-BC girls advance Thursday

The Hills-Beaver Creek girls earned a berth in the quarterfinal round of the South Section 3A Basketball Tournament Thursday in Hills.

H-BC, the tournament’s eighth seed, hosted No. 9 Adrian for an opening-round contest.

The Patriots secured a 57-33 victory to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals in Worthington, where they met No. 1 Wabasso.

H-BC, which defeated Adrian twice in the regular season, made it a clean sweep of a three-game series Thursday.

The game was up for grabs after 18 minutes of play, which ended with the Patriots sporting a modest 28-23 advantage.

H-BC put the game away by outscoring the Dragons 29-10 in the second half.

Taylor Wingert (18 points and seven rebounds) and Kelli Esselink (10 points, 15 rebounds and three assists) played key roles in the win for H-BC.

Megan Westrum grabbed 10 rebounds and passed for three assists for H-BC.
