Girls break through

The Hills-Beaver Creek volleyball team notched its first win of the 2013 season Saturday in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Competing in the Central Lyon Tournament, the Patriots dropped the first match of the day before defeating George-Little Rock in the second round.

H-BC lost its finale to end the day with a 1-2 mark.

“We won our first match, and the girls were very excited,” said H-BC coach Mandy Kor.

“We continue to improve. We were a lot more consistent with our serving and our serve receive, which really helps us out.”

Boyden-Hull topped the Patriots by 21-15 and 21-7 tallies in the opening round.

G-LR nipped H-BC 21-17 in the first set of the second round, but the Patriots bounced back to secure 21-11 and 18-16 victories in the final two sets and win the match.

West Lyon upended H-BC by 21-19 and 21-7 tallies in the final round.

Taylor Wingert (six blocks, nine digs, three kills and 13 of 14 serving with three aces) and Madison Fick (seven blocks, six digs and three kills) led the Patriots statistically.

Kelli Esselink (nine blocks), Kayla Thone (11 digs), Tori Bork (eight digs), Marissa Kracht (18 of 20 serving with four aces) and Megan Westrum (nine set assists) also played productive tournaments for the 1-6 Patriots.

H-BC plays in Mountain Lake Thursday.
