At Monday night’s meeting the Hills-Beaver Creek School Board hired Kale Wiertzema for a long-term, full-time substitute elementary teacher for sixth grade and for the head girls’ basketball coaching position.
After being denied a job at the Monday, July 22, school board meeting, Wiertzema got the first and second motions needed for a vote, and the motion carried to hire him for the teaching position. Lois Leuthold made the motion to hire Wiertzema, seconded by Arlyn Gehrke.
Not only did Wiertzema receive the school board’s approval, he also has support from the community. Jason Martens, Alan Harnack and Eric Harnack came to the meeting to speak in front of the board members. These three men promoted Wiertzema as a great candidate for the positions of teacher and coach.
“We need to think of what is best for our school, listen to the people who are hiring. They believe that this is what’s best,” stated Martens of Wiertzema.
Superintendent Todd Holthaus informed members of the board that the hiring committee did put the position back out on “help wanted” sites but had no responses. The position was reopened for application after the July 22 meeting, giving qualified candidates just less than three weeks to apply. Amie Fick make this short notice known by stating, “Earlier recruiting would have been better, back in May.”
Wiertzema also received the head girls’ basketball coaching position. Lois Leuthold again made the motion, seconded by Arlyn Gehrke, to hire Wiertzema for the coaching position. The motion carried by a four-to-three vote.
