Fireworks and food bring in the money

Several local groups came together to plan a memorable Independence Day event on Saturday, July 6, at the Rez in Hills. The event combined fireworks and fun to raise money for Sophie Gehrke and her family. Sophie, daughter of Pete and Melissa Gehrke, has suffered several medical setbacks during her short life and will have to have several additional heart surgeries in the future. Team Lorin, Ben Claire Church, Project Love and the Helping Build Communities Stronger came together to coordinate a variety of events to help raise money to cover medical expenses. Organizers said the groups met their fundraising goals. Entertainment that night was provided by vocal performers Bruce Dysthe, Ali LaRock and Laura Leenderts . Rodney Scholten organized the funds and logistics for the fireworks.
