Patriots remain alive with second-half rally

A second-half rally by Hills-Beaver Creek lifted the Patriot boys to a 72-64 victory over Fulda during Saturday’s quarterfinal round of the South Section 3A Basketball Tournament in Worthington.

Facing an eight-point deficit with 8:52 left to play, the fourth-seeded Patriots were on the ropes.

H-BC, however, rallied to outscore No. 5 Fulda 29-13 in the final 8:30 to secure a 72-64 victory.

The win sends 14-10 H-BC back to Worthington Thursday, where it meets top-seeded Southwest Christian in the tournament semifinals.

Game time is 6 p.m.

H-BC’s season remains alive due to a spectacular rally in the final stanza Saturday.

Dalton Bass gave the Patriots a 34-32 lead when he banked home a half-court shot as time expired in the first half.

A three-point play gave H-BC a 37-32 advantage 21 seconds into the second half, but the Raiders battled back by putting together a 19-6 run to open a 51-43 lead with 8:52 remaining in the second half.

The Patriots rose to the occasion and outplayed the Raiders the rest of the game.

Jeff Sandbulte knotted the score at 54 by sinking a pair of free throws during a 16-3 run that left the Patriots sporting a 59-54 lead when Carey Taubert capped the surge with a field goal with 4:52 left to play.

H-BC’s advantage swelled to eight points (66-58) when Sandbulte buried a three-point shot at the 2:16 mark, but the Raiders climbed back into contention by scoring the next five points to make it a 66-63 game with 1:50 remaining.

The Patriots settled the issue by sinking six consecutive free throws in the game’s final 1:14 to seal an eight-point win.

Both teams had their moments in the game’s first half.

H-BC led 6-3 when Fulda went on a 13-4 run to open a 16-10 advantage at the 10:07 mark.

The Patriots countered with a 12-0 run ending with a three-point shot from Taubert regain the lead at 22-16 with 6:40 remaining.

An 11-2 surge put the Raiders in front 27-24 at 4:20 and the teams proceeded to exchange leads the rest of half before Bass capped the scoring with his buzzer-beater from midcourt.

Gehrke (25 points and seven rebounds), Sandbulte (24 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists) and Taubert (12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots) led the Patriots to victory.

Jon Gallagher added three blocked shots to the cause.
