Patriots rally to win finale

The Hills-Beaver Creek boys’ basketball team finished the regular season with a 13-10 record after winning the home finale against Westbrook-Walnut Grove Monday in Hills.

The Patriots faced a two-point deficit at halftime before rallying to outscore W-WG 31-7 in the first 10:43 of the second half to set the stage for a 72-54 victory.

H-BC opens the South Section 3A Boys’ Basketball Tournament 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Worthington.

The fourth-seeded Patriots meet No. 5 Fulda in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.

H-BC’s strong performance in the second half proved to be the difference in Monday’s game against the Chargers.

Trailing 33-31 at the intermission, the Patriots used a pair of runs to take control of the contest.

H-BC scored the first seven points of the second half to move in front 38-33 when Dylan Gehrke sank a pair of free throws at the 16:08 mark.

W-WG trimmed the difference to one point (38-37) with 14:20 remaining, but the Patriots settled the issue by putting together a 24-3 run ending with Dalton Bass draining one free throw at 7:17 to give the Patriots a 62-40 cushion.

H-BC led by 24 points (65-41) when Jeff Sandbulte canned a three-point shot a 6:24 before settling with an 18-point victory at game’s end.

W-WG sported its biggest lead of the game (12-9) at the 12:02 mark of the first half.

H-BC countered with a 15-5 run ending Sandbulte turning an offensive rebound into a field goal to give the Patriots a 24-17 advantage with 7:09 remaining in the stanza.

W-WG outscored H-BC 16-7 the rest of the half to sport a 33-31 edge at the break.

Gehrke (26 points and 12 rebounds), Carey Taubert (13 points) and Sandbulte (12 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists) led H-BC to victory.

Jon Gallagher (12 rebounds and five blocked shots) and Braden Ellingson (three assists) made key contributions to the winning cause.
