Girls finish 6-16 regular season

The Hills-Beaver Creek girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with a 6-16 record after dropping a game in Adrian Monday.

H-BC, which was trying to gain some momentum for the postseason by avenging a 42-29 loss of the Dragons in Hills Jan. 3, played well early in Monday’s rematch.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, it wasn’t enough to keep them from dropping a 61-46 decision to Adrian.

H-BC attempts to snap a five-game slide when it opens the South Section 3A Tournament 7 p.m. Thursday in Ellsworth.

The ninth-seeded Patriots play No. 8 Ellsworth in an opening-round clash.

H-BC faced a 3-2 deficit in Monday’s game with Adrian before the Dragons reeled off nine-straight points to open a 12-2 lead.

The Patriots countered with a 9-1 run and trailed by two (13-11) when Taylor Wingert canned a three-point shot with 11:29 remaining in the opening stanza.

The rest of the first half belonged to Adrian.

AHS put together a 21-3 run to open a 20-point (34-14) advantage with two minutes remaining in the stanza.

H-BC trimmed the difference to 18 points (37-10) before the first half was complete.

Adrian scored the first four points of the second half on the way to opening a 25-point advantage (46-21) with 15:45 left to play.

The Patriots closed the margin to 15 points (57-42) when Wingert buried a three-point shot with 3:53 remaining.

H-BC ended up falling by 15 points at game’s end.

Wingert (14 points and six rebounds), Meghan Leuthold (10 points and 14 rebounds), Kelli Esselink (seven rebounds) and Paige Leuthold (three assists) led the Patriots statistically.
