Masons distribute Mason jars for Food Shelf contributions

The Ben Franklin Masonic Lodge in Luverne is distributing Mason jars at area businesses to collect cash for the Rock County Emergency Food Shelf during the month of February. Minnesota Masonic Charities will match donations up to $15,000 through the local lodge.

Little Lambs Preschool accepting 2013-2014 registrations

Join the Rock County Community Library, Luverne, for stories, songs, crafts and more.

•Story Hour for children ages 4-5 will meet at 10 a.m. each Thursday beginning Feb. 7, and run through April 11. Call 449-5040 to register your child.

•Laptime for children ages 0-3 with an adult will meet from 10:30-11 a.m. each Friday from Feb. 8 through April 12. No registration is necessary.


Bank Nite movie ‘Brave’ at Palace Feb. 7

The free Bank Nite movie, “Brave,” will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.

Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants Bank and Papik Motors, a free, family-friendly movie is shown on the first Thursday of every month as it was done for “Bank Nite” in the 1930s. A cash prize drawing will follow the movie. Must be present to win.


Kick-off meeting Feb. 8 for Hospice Charity Dinner and Auction

A kick-off meeting for those interested in helping with the Hospice Charity dinner and auction fundraiser will begin at noon Friday, Feb. 8, at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne.

Tickets for Hospice Charity Dinner on sale Feb. 11

Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb. 11, for the 20th Annual Hospice Charity Dinner and Auction on April 20 at the Blue Mound Banquet Center. Tickets can be purchased in person at the hospice office at 211 Main St., Suite 101, in Luverne or by calling (507) 283-1805. All seats are reserved seating.

Auction items and donations will be accepted through March 11.


UMC to host Chocolate Buffet Feb. 10

Sample a variety of homemade goodies at United Methodist Church’s sixth annual Chocolate Buffet. The event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Fellowship Hall (in basement) at 109 N. Freeman Ave., Luverne. Free will offering will be accepted.


Free tax help available at library

Volunteers through AARP will provide free tax services at the Rock County Community Library in Luverne starting Feb. 11. Call the library, 449-5040, to make an appointment. Appointments are required. The service is free for any private individual with a simple tax format. It’s not for commercial, farming or investment taxes.


Minnesota West blood drive Feb. 12

The Community Blood Bank and Minnesota West Community and Technical College will host a blood drive from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Minnesota West Luverne Center, 311 N. Spring St., Luverne.


Library to host ‘I Love to Read Month’ celebration

Join the Rock County Community Library from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, to celebrate “I Love to Read Month.” Elementary students in grades K-5 will decorate heart-shaped cookies and listen to Valentine stories. Registration is required; call 449-5040.

Feb. 14 Sweetheart Luncheon at the Hinkly House

Parents can bring their children ages 0-5 years to school, where they play and learn together at ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education). Register by Jan. 31 for class starting Feb. 5. Classes are available at no cost.  

Using Bob Ross painting method, create a Gentle Stream Landscape Oil Painting on Feb. 23. Fee is $69.

An Evening Defensive Driving 4-hour Refresher Class will be offered from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. Fee is $16 prepaid or $21 at the door. Register at the Community Education office or call 283-4724. Mail payment to 709 N. Kniss Luverne MN 56156.

Register by March 20 for the charter bus, private supper and show tickets for the April 20 Johnny Cash Trip. Fee is $59.
