The momentum Hills-Beaver Creek gained by winning its first postseason volleyball match in nine years didn’t carry over into Friday’s quarterfinal round match of the South Section 3A Tournament in Luverne.
The ninth-seeded Patriots competed well when they took on No. 1 Southwest Christian in the tournament’s second round.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, their efforts went unrewarded as the E-Gals outscored H-BC 75-50 in a 3-0 victory.
The loss ends H-BC’s 6-18 campaign.
“We played hard. We just were not able to score well against SWC,” said H-BC coach Mary Jo Graphenteen.
“We left the court with a good feeling. We just got beat by a better team.”
The Patriots set a goal to score in double-figures in every set of Friday’s match.
It was a goal they reached as they came out on the short end of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-19 decisions against SWC.
Hattie Van Wyhe (five kills and 12 digs) and Paige Leuthold (15 set assists and 12 of 12 serving) emerged as H-BC’s statistical leaders during the match.
Haley Van Wyhe recorded four kills, while Kelly Esselink and Meghan Leuthold chipped in three kills each.
Gabby Luethje completed all seven of her serves for the Patriots.
