Area 4-H kids excel at state fair
The Hills Blue Ribbon 4-H Club represented the community well at the 2012 Minnesota State 4-H horse show Sept. 14-17. Club member Denise VanVeldhuizen (top), Inwood, won three ribbons and Thea Richards, Steen, won four. Richards won a seventh-place ribbon in showmanship, a sixth-place ribbon in western pleasure, a seventh-place ribbon in western horsemanship and a third-place finish in hunt seat equitation.


Fifty-six Rock County 4-H members traveled to St. Paul twice in August and September to participate in the 2012 Minnesota State Fair. 

Livestock participants spent five days at the fair (Aug. 22-26) and General project participants attended Labor Day weekend to participate in the Non-Livestock Encampment.

Rock County also had participants on judging teams. Spencer Schacht participated on the Pipestone/Rock Consumer judging team, which placed second overall and third for reasons. Spencer was fourth overall individually and eighth individually for reasons. 

Five Rock County Dairy members participated in the Dairy Judging Contest. Kristoffer Severtson and Andrew Raak were part of the Pipestone/Rock intermediate team, which placed ninth overall. Andrea Severtson, Casey Klosterbuer and Matthew Raak participated on the Rock County senior team.
