Springwater Township  Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at the home of Teresa Kramer.

Hollyhoppers Square Dance Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Brown School in Pipestone. Don Nugent will call this dance.

Pink Ladies will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in the Blue Mound Room at Sanford Hospital Luverne.

Rock County VFW Post #2757 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the lower level at the Rock County Veterans Museum in Luverne.

Luverne Tourist Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the American Reformed Church, Luverne, for a program on Haiti.

Beaver Creek Township will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the township hall.

Maplewood Auxiliary will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the home of Mabel Overgaard.

American Legion Post #123 and Auxiliary will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the post home. A guest speaker from Sanford Hospice will be present.

Lady Luverne Red Hats will meet at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in the St. Catherine Catholic Church’s east parking lot for an 11:30 a.m. lunch with the Red Rockettes at the Glass House in Ihlen. RSVP to Connie Wieneke, 283-8470, by Oct. 15.

Luverne Tops 698 meets for weigh-in at 8 a.m. every Thursday in the Pizza Ranch. The meeting follows at 8:45 a.m.


County Road 8 closed

County Road 8 was closed Monday, Oct. 1, 1/4 mile west of County Road 3 for construction of a new bridge. It is anticipated that the road will be closed for two to three months. Call the Rock County Highway Department, 283-5010.


No scarecrow festival this year at Veterans Home

Due to construction at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne, there will be no scarecrow festival this fall. The staff and volunteers look forward to the festival next year.


Tax credit for veterans expires October 15

Soldiers or veterans from Minnesota who served in a combat zone or hazardous duty area during 2008 are eligible for a refundable tax credit. The tax credit expires on Oct. 15.

Bank Nite movie ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ at Palace Oct. 4

The free Bank Nite movie, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.

Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants Bank and Papik Motors, a free, family-friendly movie is shown on the first Thursday of every month as it was done for “Bank Nite” in the 1930s. A cash prize drawing will follow the movie. Must be present to win. Last month’s $50 cash winner was Claude VanDriel.


Buddy Walk/5K run Oct. 6 in Adrian

Registration is still open for Southwest Minnesota's first Buddy Walk at the Lower Park (near campground) in Adrian. Help “Designer Genes” promote acceptance for those with Down syndrome by attending the one-mile walk/5K run. Inflatables, ZooMobile, music and food will be available with paid registration. Fees are $10/individual and $25/family. Registration times are as follows: 5K run will be from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and begins at 8:30 a.m.; one-mile walk is from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. and begins at 10:30 a.m. Contact Stacey Rolling to register, 449-0575 or rollingt21@knology.net.


10th annual Pro-life tour Oct. 8

The Southwest Minnesota Concerned for Life Citizens will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Pizza Ranch in Edgerton for their 10th annual Fall Tour. Come and be informed on recent legislative issues and how they affect you and your family. Call Marlyn Sasker at 283-2219 with questions.


Tour of Tables registration deadline Oct. 10

The Hospice Tour of Tables Luncheon will be Saturday, Oct. 27. Contact the hospice office at 283-1805 by Oct. 10 if you are interested in decorating a table, purchasing tickets, or donating for the basket auction.


Rock County 4-H announces upcoming events

Rock County 4-H will host an open house/enrollment night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Human Services Meeting Room (next door to the 4-H Office) at 2 Roundwind Rd., Luverne. All youth in grades K- 13 are invited to join any one of the eight clubs in Rock County.

4-H LEGO Robotics informational meeting will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the same evening for any interested youth ages 9-14. Pizza will be served throughout the evening. Call the Extension office with any questions at (507) 283-1302.


American Reformed youth to host movie night

The Senior RCYF youth group will show the movie, “October Baby,” rated PG-13, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in the Worship Center at American Reformed Church in Luverne. Learn about a girl who finds out that she is the adopted survivor of an attempted abortion. A buffet of fall desserts for a freewill donation will follow.

The Junior RCYF youth group will show a family film, “The Lorax,” at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Fellowship Hall.



Fallfest at St. Catherine Oct. 14

St. Catherine Catholic Church, Luverne, invites the public for a day of fellowship, food, and fun at Fallfest 2012. The day will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Mass; from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. "Not Exactly" will play while bake sale, raffle tickets, children’s games, and inflatables will be available. A turkey dinner will be served from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the night will end at 7 p.m. with raffle ticket drawings for cash prizes and gift certificates. Call 283-8502 for tickets.


St. Catherine to host shredding fundraiser Oct. 27

St. Catherine Catholic Church, Luverne, and Dakota Shred It will sponsor the second annual shredding fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in The Laundry Room parking lot at the corner of Highway 75 and Main Street in Luverne. Watch your paper being shredded on the truck monitor. No need to remove paperclips or staples. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Minnesota School Readiness classes meet Tuesdays for children who are at least 3 years old by Sept. 1. Choose morning or afternoon sessions. Call 283-9191 for more information.

School Readiness registration

Registrations for Luverne School Readiness Preschool programs are now being accepted for the 2012-13 school year. Children must be at least 3 years old by Sept. 1 and not yet in kindergarten. Free and reduced fees are available, and priority is given to families with greater needs. Parent workshops and field trips are also available.
