The Hills-Beaver Creek football team celebrated homecoming Friday by pasting Fulda 54-16 in Hills.
Dalton Bass ran for 171 yards and scored four touchdowns and Dylan Gehrke passed for 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Patriots to their fifth-straight victory.
Although the Patriots prevailed in the game, H-BC coach was not pleased with his team’s performance in the first half.
“We were flat in the first half,” he claimed.
“We just didn’t play with a lot of emotion. I challenged the kids at halftime to come out and dominate the second half and they did.”
H-BC never trailed in the game, but the Patriots didn’t sport a comfortable lead until late in the second quarter.
The teams exchanged possessions to open the game before H-BC took a 6-0 lead at the end of its second offensive series.
A seven-play, 53-yard drive featuring a 28-yard Gehrke-to-Jeff Sandbulte pass set up a five-yard touchdown run by Bass.
The score remained 6-0 until early in the second quarter, after H-BC’s Nathan Taubert blocked a punt late in the first period.
Taubert’s effort ignited a drive featuring a 45-yard pass from Gehrke to Carey Taubert.
Senior Tate Bork capped the march with an eight-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter and Gehrke ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to make it a 14-0 contest.
Fulda climbed back into contention with its next offensive possession.
The Raiders moved the ball deep into H-BC territory before Zack Holt ended the possession with a three-yard touchdown run.
Fulda’s Tyler Ruesch carried in the ensuing two-point conversion to trim H-BC’s lead to six points (14-8).
The Patriots moved the ball 86 yards in seven plays to up their lead to 22-8 with their next offensive possession.
Bass ended the drive with a one-yard plunge and toted in the two-point conversion to give the Patriots a 14-point cushion.
Fulda didn’t waste any time in answering the challenge offered by H-BC.
Reusch fielded the kickoff following H-BC’s third touchdown and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown.
Holt ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to make it a 22-16 contest.
H-BC responded to the challenge by putting together an extended drive late in the second quarter that left the Patriots sporting a 30-16 advantage at the intermission.
A seven-play, 73-yard march ended with Bass scoring on a one-yard run.
A successful Gehrke-to-Jeff Sandbulte conversion pass upped H-BC’s lead to 14 points at the break.
The Patriots put the game away in the third quarter, when they produced 16 unanswered points.
“I challenged the guys at halftime and they responded,” Metzger said.
“Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and we control of the contest with our running game.”
After forcing Fulda to punt three plays into the third quarter, the Patriots struck quickly as Bass returned the punt 87 yards for a touchdown.
Gehrke hooked with Sandbulte for a conversion pass following the touchdown to make it a 38-16 game.
H-BC’s second possession of the second half developed into an 11-play, 57-yard drive.
Gehrke, who completed 12 of 14 passes in the game, flipped a 10-yard touchdown strike to Sandbulte at the end of the series.
Bass carried in the two-point conversion to up H-BC’s lead to 46-16.
The Patriots recorded their final touchdown of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Gehrke fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Bork and Bass carried in the conversion to cap H-BC’s 38-point victory.
H-BC plays 1-4 Southwest United Friday in Brewster.
