Clone of Buffalos complete 3-4 regular season
The Tri-State Buffalos wrapped up a 3-4 regular season Saturday in Worthington.
Taking on the unbeaten Southwest Huskerz on their home field, the Buffalos had an opportunity to build some momentum heading into the upcoming Southern Plains Football League Playoffs.
T-S was in a position to register an upset when it trailed 14-6 with 3:18 remaining in the first half.
The Huskerz, however, scored two touchdowns late in the second quarter to open a 28-6 lead at the intermission and matched the Buffalos’ scoring output of six points in the second half to nail down a 34-12 victory.
Southwest turned its first offensive possession of the game into an 8-0 lead by registering a one-yard rushing touchdown and a successful conversion pass at the 9:13 mark of the first quarter.
The score remained 8-0 until the 5:55 mark of the second quarter, when the Huskerz took advantage of an interception by the Buffalos by recording a three-yard touchdown run to make it a 14-0 game.
T-S climbed back into contention when Derrick Singleton fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to Stan Jennings with 3:18 remaining in the first half to trim the difference to eight points (14-6).
The Huskerz answered the challenge by scoring 14 points in the final 2:01 of the second quarter to settle the issue.
Three plays after the Buffalos produced their first touchdown, Southwest scored a 75-yard touchdown run and a successful conversion run to make it a 22-6 game.
The Huzkerz picked off a T-S pass moments later and capped the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds remaining in the second stanza.
Southwest upped its lead to 28 points (34-6) with a 64-yard touchdown run with 1:08 left in the third quarter.
The Buffalos scored the game’s final six points when Alex Toupal tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tyrel Kool with 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.
T-S opens the playoff Saturday.
