Meetings
Parkinson’s Support Group will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Call Dianne at 507-530-3307 with questions.
Special Olympics fall informational meeting regarding bowling, fundraiser and state issues will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Luverne Pizza Ranch. Meal is at individual expense.
MS Support Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Luverne Pizza Ranch. All persons with MS, family and friends are invited. Call 283-2069 with questions.
 Hardwick Goal Seekers meet every Monday in Hardwick City Hall for the purpose of support and encouragement for weight loss journeys. Weigh-in begins at 6 p.m., and the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Call Glenda, 449-0568, with questions.
Women’s Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 8 p.m. Mondays in the United Methodist Church.

Register students new to Luverne school district 
New residents to Luverne School District #2184 should register their children at the respective school offices for the 2019-2020 school year.
The High School/Middle School Office is open for new students to register. Call 507-283-4491 for middle school and high school grades 6-12.
The Elementary School Office will be open for new students to register starting Monday, Aug. 12. Parents of elementary grades K-5 can call 507-283-4497.
First day of school is Monday, Sept. 16.
 
Register for defensive driving class
Save money on your car insurance premium if you are 55 or older by taking the 8-hour defensive driving class Aug. 20 through Luverne Community Education. Classes will be four hours each evening. Cost is $25. Register by calling 507-283-4724.
 
Free food Aug. 15
New Life Celebration Church will offer free produce, bread and meat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Generations building (former Senior Center) at 319 East Lincoln Street for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags and boxes. Call 283-4366.
 
Plaza ‘Night with the Zoo’ Aug. 15
The Great Plains Zoomobile will be at the Plaza at the History Center (East Main Street) from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. A History Center fundraiser supper for $4 per person will be available. Some of the other attractions include an animal tracking scavenger hunt, Grand “A” Alpacas and Tracy Animal Rescue.
 
‘Pint for a Pint’ blood drive Aug. 16
Take 16 Brewing is teaming up with Remedy Brewing of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, KBACK Radio and Community Blood Bank to sponsor a “Pint for Pint” blood drive from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Take 16, 509 E. Main Street in Luverne. Donors will receive a “pint” of brew and an event T-shirt for giving blood. The winning brewery will receive a traveling trophy and bragging rights.
Donors are reminded to bring an I.D. along.
 
 Apply by Aug. 16 for youth state park hunt
Youth have through Aug. 16 to apply for a youth adult-mentored deer hunt on Nov. 23 and 24 at Blue Mounds State Park. Ten youth will be chosen by lottery from all applicants. To apply, youth must be 12-15 years old and have completed a Hunter’s Safety Course. Touch the Sky event Aug. 17
A Prairie Plant Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Prairie Waterfall Trail led by botanist Maureen Mulligan at Touch the Sky Prairie located at 1023 171st Street north and west of Luverne.
 
Sign up by Aug. 19 to teach community ed classes
Community Education will be publishing the Fall Community Education catalog of offerings and is looking for instructors and/or class ideas for the period of the last two weeks of September and the months of October and November. Suggestions are due by Monday, Aug. 19, and can be submitted to Karen Willers at k.willers@isd2184.net or Cindy Arends at c.arends@isd2184.net or call 507-283-4724. Rock County Dementia Network event Aug. 20
An introductory event for the Rock County Dementia Network is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 20, in the Generations building. Two sessions — at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. — will address Alzheimer’s and other memory loss conditions.
Call 507-283-9846 to sign up for $2.25 lunch. Virtual Aging and Dementia Experiences will be available at 1 p.m.
Dr. Joseph Gaugler will focus on how communities can support families and professionals who care for people with memory loss.

Brown Bag Lunch features the Cotes Aug. 20
Ron and Jane Cote will perform live music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the History Center Main Street Plaza as part of the Brown Bag Lunch Concert Series. Rain location will be indoors at the History Center. Bring your lunch and a chair.
 
Optimist Club Kids Fishing Derby set for Aug. 25
The Luverne Optimist Club will host the Kids Fishing Derby at the Minnesota Veterans Home pond Sunday, Aug. 25, for ages 3-15 accompanied by an adult chaperone. Fising is from 3-5 p.m. with food and prizes at 5. Poles and bait will be available at no charge. Call Travis at 507-220-5191 or Stan at 507-227-0681 with questions.
 
Summer band lessons for fifth-graders
Free band lessons are being offered for fifth-grade beginning band students starting Monday, Aug. 26. The lessons are not mandatory but offer a good opportunity for beginners to get instrumental experience before school begins. All  lessons will be in Mrs. Capistran’s elementary music room.
The half-hour lesson dates are Aug. 26-29 and Sept. 3-4 as follows: flutes 1 p.m; clarinets 1:30 p.m.; saxaphones 2 p.m.; trumpets 3 p.m.; French horns, baritones and tubas 3:30 p.m.; percussion 4 p.m.
On Friday, Sept. 6, one-hour lessons are as follows: flutes 9 a.m.; clarinets 10 a.m.; saxaphones 11 a.m.; trumpets 12:30 p.m.; trombones 1:30 p.m.; French horns, baritones and tubas 2:30 p.m.; percussion 3:30 p.m.
Students will need to bring instruments and books for summer lessons. Items that have been ordered from Schmitt Music will be on hand at school on the first day of summer lessons.

Tractor ride Aug. 30
The 50-mile Luverne fourth-annual Tractor Ride begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at the Luverne City Park. Registration is at 8 a.m., and cost is $25 including breakfast and lunch.
Tractors need to be able to travel at 10 mph and must be equipped with a slow-moving vehicle sign on the back. No dual wheels are permitted. Riders must be provided with properly  mounted seats. Drivers must be licensed and are responsible for their own insurance. No alcohol will be allowed on the ride.

Discovery Time has openings for fall
Openings in the Discovery Time Preschool are available for 3-4-year-olds in the MWF morning class and the T/Th afternoon class. Children who are 3 by Sept. 1, 2019, are eligible, and schohlarships are available if income guidelines can be met. Call Luverne Community Education at 507-283-4724 for more details. (Note: The office will be closed from July 19-Aug. 9.)
 
Free Medicare classes
Free classes for people who are new to Medicare are offered the second and third Mondays every month at the Minnesota River Area on Aging, 1939 Engebretson Ave., Slayton.
In the first class, participants will learn basics of Medicare and their options. The second class teaches how to research these options using non-biased tools, such as the Medicare website and Medicare Plan Finder Tool.
