Bison Tales at Blue Mounds State Park Feb. 8

Learn more about the bison at Blue Mounds State Park and how they are part of a larger effort to conserve bison throughout the state.

Touch real pieces of a bison, practice bison communication skills, and make a bison storybook to take home. Meet at the cart-in site picnic shelter from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. Call 507-283-6057.

 

Tai Ji Quan starts Feb. 8

 Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance will begin another round of classes Friday, Feb. 8, in the Luverne Area Aquatics and Fitness center on North Blue Mound Avenue.

A total of 24 classes will be each Monday and Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

‘Get Hooked Ice Fishing Derby’ set for Feb. 9

The “Get Hooked Ice Fishing Derby” is planned for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at The Lake in Luverne. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with concessions available from 11 a.m. by Boy Scouts Troop #32. Cost is $15 for adults (two for $25) and $10 for youth (two for $15). Prizes will be awarded, and free rods and reels will be given to youth until gone. Temporary and permanent ice houses are allowed. Weather date is Feb. 16. Call the Chamber at 283-4061 with questions.

 

Hospice kickoff meeting Feb. 14

Sanford Luverne Hospice will host a kick-off meeting at noon Thursday, Feb. 14, for anyone interested in helping with this year’s charity dinner and auction. RSVP for lunch and materials by Feb. 11 by call ing 283-1805.

 

Snowy Survival at Blue Mounds State Park Feb. 16

Practice survival skills like building a snow den and starting a fire at the Blue Mounds State Park from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Cart-in Site Picnic Shelter. It’s open to all ages and abilities. (If there is little snow the program will instead be spring survival.) Call 507-283-6057.

 

Free tax help available at library

Volunteers through AARP will provide free tax services at the Rock County Community Library in Luverne starting Monday, Feb. 11. Call the library, 449-5040, to make an appointment. Appointments are required. Evening appointments are also available.

The service is free through April 15 for any private individual with a simple tax format. It’s not for commercial, farming or investment taxes.

Sneakers, Slithers & Scaly Creatures will be Feb. 7 is for children ages 4 through grade 2 who want to learn more about reptiles and amphibians. Plan to pet a real snake. Fee is $5.

Indoor Playtime is Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at St. Catherine gym for children birth to 5 years and a parent. Registration requested for this free activity.

Frugal Family Living on Feb. 12 will help participants learn and share ideas to save money. Fee is $5 per family.

Valentine Treats for Kids in the Kitchen class for students grades K-6 will be held on Feb. 14. Fee is $18.

Preschool/Daycare for Free? On Feb. 19 or Feb. 21 will help you understand what Parent Aware, Early Learning Scholarships and Four Star Rating means in the world of preschoolers. No fee for this free class, but registration requested. Choose Feb. 19 at 10:45 a.m. or 6:15 p.m. or choose Feb. 21 at 11.

Using yarn and beads and a loom, students in grades 3-5 will do Circular Weaving on Feb. 21 to make a unique piece.  Fee is $12 and includes all materials.

Learn some practical techniques to grow big yields of vegetables and fruits in Big Yields in Small Places class on Feb. 21 and 28.  Fee is $20.

Juniors and seniors: ACT Prep Class begins Feb. 25. Fee is $125 which includes study guide.

Register for summer K-12 T-ball, Baseball, Softball by March 29. After that the fee will be $50 higher and registrations are accepted only if there are openings
