Rock County Township Association Annual meeting will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Rock County Library. All townships are encouraged to have representation at this meeting.

Bank Nite movie ‘The Star’ Dec. 6

The free Bank Nite movie, “The Star,” rated PG, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.

Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants National Bank and Papik Motors, a free, family-friendly movie is shown on the first Thursday of every month as it was done for “Bank Nite” in the 1930s. A cash prize drawing will follow the movie. Must be present to win.


Bell ringers needed

The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign is looking for individuals or groups to ring the bell this holiday season for 2-hour shifts between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at either Teal’s or Shopko. Luverne Middle/High School concert Dec. 7

The Luverne Middle/High School choir concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the high school gym. The sixth-grade choir, seventh/eighth-grade choir, ninth/tenth grade girls’ choir and high school concert choir will perform music of the season. Admission is a freewill donation to the Luverne BackPack Program.


Children’s Christmas Party at History Center Dec. 8

The Rock County Historical Society invites all area children to the History Center  from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, for a Christmas party. Activities include face-painting, a scavenger hunt, make ‘n’ take projects, Christmas storytime, photo op and snacks. The event is free.


Christmas Cantata foodshelf benefit Dec. 8

The Carnegie Minstrels choir and orchestra will present the Community Christmas Cantata, “Let There Be Christmas,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. The event is a benefit for the Rock County Foodshelf. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for age 12 and under.


Luverne Street Music students present ‘Sounds of Christmas’

The Luverne Street Music students will present “The Sounds of Christmas” Dec. 8 at the Palace Theatre. Show times are 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Cost is a freewill offering.


Hardwick Santa Claus Day Dec. 8

Hardwick Community Club will host Santa Claus Day from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Hardwick Legion Hall.

Jim Oliver will kick off the free event at 2 p.m. with a puppet show. From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. will be a cupcake walk, make and take crafts and cookie decorating. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be available for pictures from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.


‘Angel Fund’ helps over-due school lunch accounts

Food service employees at Luverne Public Schools are hosting a spaghetti supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Luverne Elementary School commons.

Proceeds from the freewill donation will go toward the “Angel Fund,” to assist families with negative school breakfast and lunch accounts.

Volunteers will serve the privately purchased and donated food items.

The event occurs prior to the 7:30 p.m. band concert in the high school gym.


Area Red Cross blood drives Dec. 13 and 19

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donors into the holiday season.  Donors are asked to participate in one of two area blood drives.

 •Luverne: Thursday, Dec. 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Luverne High School.

•Jasper: Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 1:30-6:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 101 Spicer Street.

Register for grades 5-6 basketball tournament

Luverne Community Education will host an invitational basketball tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26, for grades 5-6 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Register your team at (select Community Ed under “schools”) or call 507-283-4724. Cost is $125 per team payable with registration.

The 4-hour Defensive Driving Refresher Class will be Dec. 13 for adults 55 years of age or older. (Must have taken the 8-hour course.) Cost is $20 prepaid.

A second Kids in Kitchen Christmas Treats class has been added to the schedule for students grades K-6. This newly added class will be Dec. 18.   Fee is $18 or register with sibling or friend and pay $14/person.

Great gift idea! Mike Frisch School of Fish for students in third grade and older will be Feb. 2. Each child receives a new rod and reel with tackle. One adult per child may attend at no additional cost. Fee is $30.

Com Ed is trying a new venue for a dinner theatre bus trip. Enjoy Daytrippers Dinner Theatre (located near the Mall of America) presenting Ain’t Retirement Grand on Dec. 9.  Fee is $85.  (Register by Nov. 30).
