National Library Week April 8-14

To celebrate National Library Week April 8-14, the Rock County Library will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12, with refreshments and drawings for prizes.

On Saturday, April 14, a special treat for children will be Jim Oliver’s presentation of the puppet show, “The Singing Children,” at 10:30 a.m.


Performing arts workshop April 14

Youth in grades 5 through 12 are invited to the Rock County 4-H Performing Arts Workshop Saturday, April 14, at the Rock County Extension Office in Luverne.

The workshop will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and is free to 4-H’ers and non-members.

Focus of the workshop will be on stage acting and include learning about the basics that includes dancing.

LWML rally set for April 14 in Marshall

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Spring Rally will begin with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Marshall. Speaker for the morning event will be the Rev. Nabil Nour.


The Locals perform at Palace April 14

The Locals, a group of local musicians, will perform “One Hit Wonders” at the historic Palace Theatre at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 14. The event is a fundraiser for the Luverne Optimist Club.

Silent movie shown at Palace Sunday, April 15

The silent movie, “The Freshman,” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the historic Palace Theatre in Luverne, featuring Leona Hoek on the classic theater organ. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.


Free Southern Gospel Concert April 15

The American Reformed Church in Luverne will sponsor a free Southern Gospel Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the church. The group “Triumphant Sound Quartet” will perform from 3 to 5 p.m. Refreshments follow.


Free food April 19

New Life Celebration Church will offer free food — fresh produce, bread and meat — from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the Luverne Senior Center for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags or boxes. Call  283-4366 with questions.


More food shelf hours

Rock County Food Shelf will add additional hours on the third Thursday of the month. The food shelf is open every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. and will also be open from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 19, May 17, and June 21. Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll fundraiser April 28

The Luverne Knights of Columbus will be conducting their annual Tootsie Roll Fundraiser for Intellectual Disabilities at Teal’s Market and Shopko on Saturday, April 28. Proceeds are donated to Rock County Opportunities (RCO).

Hospice Dinner and Auction April 21

Tickets are still available for the Sanford Luverne Hospice Dinner and Auction April 21 at Grand Prairie Events in Luverne. The event includes a plated dinner catered by The Bluestem, raffles, and silent and live auctions.

Tickets may be purchased in person at the Hospice Office in the Luverne City Office building (use City Office entrance on Luverne Street) or call the Hospice office at 507-283-1805 to purchase tickets using a credit card. Ticketholders will be eligible to win a trip for two to Banff, Canada.


Adrian and Luverne libraries host author Brian Freeman

•The Adrian Branch Library will sponsor “An Evening with award-winning Minnesota author Brian Freeman” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Adrian Elementary School.

•The Rock County Library in Luverne will host Minnesota Author Brian Freeman at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the library.


Free tax help available at library

Volunteers through AARP are providing free tax services at the Rock County Community Library in Luverne during tax season. Call the library, 449-5040, to make an appointment. Appointments are required. Evening appointments are also available.

The service is free for any private individual with a simple tax format. It’s not for commercial, farming or investment taxes.


Calling all Korean War veterans

The Rock County Star Herald is helping to fulfill a request by Korean War veterans to assemble eligible individuals for a group picture.

Anyone who served in the armed forces or the National Guard during the Korean War (1950-1953) and is from Rock County is being asked to call the newspaper at 507-283-2333.

Leave your name, address, phone number and years of service. Once enough interest and names have been assembled, the group picture will be assembled.
