One Warm Coat Project
The Rock County One Warm Coat Project is collecting clean, reusable coats (children’s coats especially). Coats may be brought to ATLAS for Life, 201 E. Main Street in Luverne Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m. through Oct. 31. Library offers Fall Story Hour events
Story Hour is open to pre-school children ages 4-5. Story Hour will be from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday until Nov. 19. Register your child by calling 449-5040.
Laptime Story Hour is open to ages birth-3 with an adult. No registration is required. Laptime Story Hour will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. every Friday through Nov. 20.
 
Fire Prevention Week events scheduled
•The fire hall open house will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. There will be kitchen fire safety and Jaws of Life demonstrations in addition to refreshments.
•Firefighters will assist the public in changing smoke detector batteries Oct. 12. Call City Hall, 449-2388.
 
4-H Open House
Rock County 4-H will host an Open House/Enrollment Night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Community Meeting Room next to the Extension Office at 2 Roundwind Road, Luverne (Health and Human Services Building). All youth in grades K-13 are invited to join any one of the seven clubs in Rock County. Call the Extension Office with any questions at 507-283-1302. Pizza will be served throughout the evening.
 
Habitat Oktoberfest fundraiser Oct. 10
The SW Minnesota Habitat for Humanity will host an Oktoberfest fundraiser with live music, a rib feed and great beer from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Take 16 Brewery on Main Street in Luverne. Inside seating will be available.
 
St. Catherine shreddeing Oct. 10
St. Catherine Church of Luverne Carmelites will again sponsor a Dakota Shred It truck at the corner of Highway 75 and Main at the Laundry Room parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. The truck is capable of shredding large volumes of paper. No need to remove paperclips and staples. A freewill donation will be accepted.
 
CoffeeBreak to begin Oct. 13
CoffeeBreak will meet at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13, through April 2, at the Luverne Christian Reformed Church (605 N. Estey St.). The Book of Isaiah will be the Bible study.
A get-acquainted kickoff and registration will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. There is no cost, and all faiths are welcome.
StoryHour, a time of play and Bible stories, will be available for children ages 2 through kindergarten, and a nursery is available for the littlest ones.

Blood Donation Opportunities Oct. 16 through 31
Donate blood with the Red Cross to support cancer patients and others needing blood. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
 
Medicare Part D appointments Oct. 21 and 22
Medicare Part D drug coverage and enrollment questions will be anwered by a trained counselor in Luverne by appointment. Call 1-800-333-2433 to schedule.

Hospice Tour of Tables set for Oct. 24
Sanford Luverne Hospice will host its annual Tour of Tables luncheon Saturday, Oct. 24. Contact the hospice office at 283-1805 if you are interested in decorating and hosting a table, donating a gift basket, or purchasing an individual ticket. The deadline is Oct. 1.

Register by Friday, Oct. 9, to be one of the climbers at the Blue Mound State Park at this Introduction to Rock Climbing class offered on Saturday, Oct 17. Fee is $75.
Let’s Play in Nature on Friday, Oct. 9, will meet in the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom to read a story, make a puppet, sing songs and enjoy each other. Children ages 3-5. Fee is $12.
Grandparents or special adults are invited to visit the preschool rooms with their grandchild ages 2-5 for Grandparent and Me class Monday morning, Oct. 12. No fee, but registration is required.
Experience it for yourself – Virtual Dementia Oct. 14 – what it is like to have dementia. This real life experience will happen to you and will be something you won’t forget. Register for a half hour appointment time. Fee is $5.
Take an assessment and find out if you are at risk of falling and then learn ways to improve your balance at Balance and Falls on Oct. 21. Fee is $5.
Are you looking to improve your computer skills to help you look for employment? Attend this 8 week Computer Class beginning Oct. 21. Students will pass assessments and receive the Norhtstar Digital Literacy Certificate which will provide a credential for employment. Fee is $200.
Exploring the Science and Art of Beekeeping on Oct. 22 is for anyone interested in becoming a beekeeper or for those who want to learn more about bees. Fee is $14.
School Readiness Preschool program has openings for children ages 3-5 years. The program will meet once a week during the school year on Tuesday morning or Tuesday afternoon. Scholarship help is available. Call 283-4724 for more details.

Register for 2016 Discovery Time preschool. There are openings for children ages 3, 4, or 5 years in the Tuesday/Thursday afternoon classes. 
All 3-year-old children living in Minnesota will do an Early Childhood Screening as they near age 4. If your child is nearly 4 years old or already 4 and has not been screened, call 283-4724 to arrange an appointment.
