Remember Rally to host 9-11 time capsule dedication Sept. 9
To observe the 15th anniversary of the 9-11 terror attacks on the United States, a time capsule will be placed in the Rock County Library at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. (not on Sept. 11 as earlier reported). The event will honor and thank local first responders while remembering those who perished during the attacks and later from illnesses resulting from conditions at Ground Zero. The Blue Light Ceremony at the courthouse Sept. 11 has been cancelled. Call Diane Sherwood, 283-4194, with questions.
 
Veterans Home plans Scarecrow Festival
The Veterans Home is planning its 10th annual Fall Festival. Organizations are encouraged to join in the fun and put up their own scarecrow creations. There is no specific theme this year.
The home also invites the public to join them Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10-11:15 a.m. for carnival games and great prizes. Scarecrow displays will be judged that day, too, so come out and vote for your favorites.
 
Cardinal Gold’n Bowl Sept. 9 during football game
The annual Gold’n Bowl is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, at the Luverne Public School Football Field before the Luverne-Windom football game.
The Luverne Area Chamber will team up with Gold’n Plump and Glen’s Food Center to serve grilled chicken sandwhiches and chips. Meals cost $3 each. Serving begins at 5:30 p.m.
LHS Cardinal Country clothing and gear will also be for sale at the event.
Food is donated by Gold’n Plump and Glen’s Food Center. Participating in this event supports the Luverne Cardinal Athletic Program and the Luverne Area Chamber.
 
Friends of the Library book sale set for Sept. 15-17
Donations of books may be made until Monday, Sept. 12, for the Friends of the Library book sale. The sale runs from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Books cost $2 per bag. Friends of the Library can shop early from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. All books will be free during business hours from Sept. 26 through Oct. 1.
 
Free Food Ministry set for Sept. 15
The monthly Food Ministry, sponsored by New Life Celebration Church, will be from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Luverne Senior Center. If you’re having trouble putting food on the table, come for fresh produce, bread and meat. Children will be asked to wait outside.
 
Blue Mound Lutheran Fall Festival Sept. 18
The Blue Mound Lutheran Church, rural Luverne, Fall Festival will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. Pastor Gary Anderson will be the guest speaker and a catered meal will follow the service. All are welcome.
 
Optimist Club sponsors Kids’ Fishing Derby Sept. 18
The Luverne Optimist Club will sponsor a free kids’ fishing derby from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, for ages 5-15 at the Luverne Veterans Pond. Participants need to bring a fishing pole and tackle or call ahead to reserve a pole.
Complimentary hot dogs and beverages will be served after the derby along with prizes and drawings. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

Hospice Tour of Tables brunch set for Oct. 8
Sanford Luverne Hospice will host its annual Tour of Tables Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne. The event begins at 9 a.m. to tour the tables and bid on a basket auction, and brunch will be served at 10:30 a.m. To participate with decorating a table or donating a gift basket, or to purchase a ticket, contact the hospice office at 283-1805. Deadline is Sept. 23.
 
Shredding fundraiser scheduled for Oct. 1
St. Catherine’s Carmelites and Dakota Shred It will sponsor the sixth annual shredding fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Laundry Room parking lot on the corner of Highway 75 and Main Street, Luverne. Cost is a freewill offering. No need to remove paperclips or staples.
 
Museum closed for move to History Center
The Rock County Museum on North Freeman Avenue is now closed in order to move displays to the new History Center opening this fall in downtown Luverne. The Rock County Historical Society can still be reached at 283-2122 and at rcmuseum@gmail.com.

Respite care available
for caregivers
Respite care is available for caregivers who need a break to maintain their own physical and emotional health. Respite services provide temporary comfort, supervision and care for loved ones to give caregivers time for other responsibilities. Hwy. 15 closed for bridge construction
Rock County Highway 15 (61st Street) will be closed 1 1/2 miles east of Kanaranzi for new bridge construction over Kanaranzi Creek. Construction began Aug. 9, and a signed detour will be in place during the 10 to 14 weeks of construction. For more information contact engineer Mark Sehr at 507-283-5010.
 
Farmers Market open Thursdays
The Luverne Farmers Market is now open for business from 4-7 p.m. Thursdays at Redbird Field. Farmers Market continues Thursdays through October 26. Watch for the signs on Main Street.
