Meetings

Grief Support Group will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting Sept. 24, at Sanford Luverne for five weeks. Preregister at Sanford Hospice Luverne, 507-283-1805. 
Library book sale starts Wednesday
Friends of the Rock County Library will conduct their annual book sale beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the library basement.
Masks are required and social distancing is encouraged. Only 10 shoppers will be allowed into the book sale at one time.
Sale date and times are:
•Wednesday, Sept. 23, 4 to 7:30 p.m.
•Thursday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
•Friday, Sept. 25, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
•Saturday, Sept. 26 ($5/bag book sale) 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The $5/bag sale continues from Monday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Oct. 9. Books are free from Oct. 12-17.
 
Bloodmobile in Luverne Sept. 28
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Luverne from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Grand Prairie Events on South Estey Street.
Make an appointment to donate by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Bring identification and masks to appointments.
The Red Cross is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Those with antibodies may be able to donate plasma to help patients who need help fighting the virus.
 
Alzheimer’s Walk for a Cure Sept. 19-28
The Southwest Dementia Awareness Network will host a virtual Alzheimer’s Walk for a Cure Sept. 19-28.
Join the Southwest Dementia Awareness Network – Walk for a Cure Facebook event page. Get a T-shirt, make a donation and walk with family and friends any time between Sept. 19 and 28.
All funds raised stay in southwest Minnesota.
 
Prairie Ally Food Forest seeks tools and talent
Prairie Ally is seeking old and unique pieces of farm equipment or garden tools to incorporate into sculptures for an artistic agricultural appreciation project at the Food Forest on North Blue Mound Avenue in Luverne

Coffee Break and StoryHour starts Sept. 29
Coffee Break Bible Study and StoryHour meets at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, starting Sept. 29, at Luverne Christian Reformed Church, 605 North Estey Street. StoryHour involves playtime and Bible stories for children ages 3 through kindergarten. Nursery is available for littlest ones. There is no charge and no Bible knowledge is necessary. All faiths and all ages are welcome. Study Psalms starts Oct. 6, (check to see if you got a book last year). Invite a friend for fellowship and refreshments. Community Education has teamed up with Luverne Pizza Ranch for a fundraiser to benefit Community Education. On third Tuesdays (started Sept. 15) from 3 p.m. to closing, 10 percent of all take-out or delivery orders will benefit Community Ed programs such as Discovery Time, summer rec, ECFE and more.
Defensive Driving beginning class is Nov. 5 and 12 (4 hours each evening.) Refresher classes will be offered Oct. 22 or Dec. 3. The program allows adults 55 years of age or older to save on insurance premiums. After the Beginning 8-hour class, every three years drivers take a 4-hour refresher class.
Runnin’ for Fun on Sept. 25 for kindergarten age and older offers participants the chance to join the LHS Cardinals cross country team to see what a race feels and looks like. Fee is $5.
If you are interested in Basketball for Grades 3-6, give Community Ed an email address by Oct. 2 so details can be sent out for the winter sport.
Story Writing & Illustrating on Oct. 5 is for grades 3-6 to work together on a story and illustrations and then present to parents. Ten students are needed, and fee is $19.
Paw Patrol, a Zoom class on Oct. 5, will provide guidelines for choosing a pet, feeding, exercise and safety. Register by email. Fee is $10.
Learn how to gain some peace of mind with your money using technology at Emotions and Money on Oct. 6 and 8. The class is offered through the Blandin Broadband Grant, so there is no fee, but preregistration is required.
 
Meals on Wheels continue in Jasper
Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) has provided Meals on Wheels in Jasper through the Sunrise Village, which is now closed. Going forward, meals will be prepared at the LSS Luverne site and delivered to Jasper City Hall twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. There is also an option to add frozen meals for delivery with the hot meals.

History Center open with limited hours
The Rock County History Center is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Some safety precautions — with masks and gloves available — will be in place to protect against the spread of coronavirus. The phone number is 507-283-2122.
