Sept. 12 Plaza ‘Fall Festival’ canceled
The family night event, “Fall Festival” scheduled at the plaza on Main Street for today (Sept. 12) is canceled due to the forecast for rain.
 
County Highway 12 closed for bridge repair
County Highway 12, located on the Rock/Pipestone county line will be closed one mile west of Highway 75 for bridge construction.
The project is estimated to take two weeks with the roadway (also known as 251st Street) opening Sept. 23.

History Center annual fundraiser Sept. 16
The Rock County Historical Society annual fundraiser will be Monday, Sept. 16, in Sterling’s Grillé. Social hour is at 5:30 p.m., followed by 6 p.m. dinner and short business meeting. The program will follow at 7 p.m. across the street at the Palace Theatre where photographs from the History Center archives will be presented on the big screen. Dinner cost is $25. The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
 
Beaver Creek changes meeting date
The regular meeting of the Beaver Creek City Council has been moved to Wednesday, Sept. 18. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
 
Join the Healthier Southwest Community Leadership Team
A Healthier Southwest Community Leadership Team is looking for new members to emphasize healthy living. Donations accepted for library book sale
The Friends of the Library are conducting their annual fundraising Book Sale Sept. 18-21.
Donations of books and other library materials may be dropped off at the Rock County Library on Main Street Luverne.
 
Upcoming concerts at Palace Theatre
The Palace Theatre will host two concerts, “Coming Home” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and “Superstar: The Songs, the Stories, the Carpenters” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. Tickets are available at the Palace Theatre box office or by calling 507-283-4339.
 
Free food Sept. 19
New Life Celebration Church will offer free produce, bread and meat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Generations building (former Senior Center) at 319 East Lincoln Street for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags and boxes. Call 283-4366.
 
American Red Cross blood drive Sept. 23
The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 1-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the Grace Lutheran Church at 500 North Kniss Avenue in Luverne. The Red Cross is urging blood and platelet donations as well as financial gifts following Hurricane Dorian.

Discovery Time has openings for fall
Openings in the Discovery Time Preschool are available for 3-4-year-olds in the MWF morning class and the T/Th afternoon class. Children who are 3 by Sept. 1, 2019, are eligible, and schohlarships are available if income guidelines can be met. Call Luverne Community Education at 507-283-4724 for more details.
 
Free Medicare classes
Free classes for people who are new to Medicare are offered the second and third Mondays every month at the Minnesota River Area on Aging, 1939 Engebretson Ave., Slayton.
In the first class, participants will learn basics of Medicare and their options. The second class teaches how to research these options using non-biased tools, such as the Medicare website and Medicare Plan Finder Tool.

Playing Nice in the Sandbox on Sept. 16 is for teachers, child care providers and stay-at-home moms.  Kim Ratz will entertain with songs and stories, while helping improve skills and techniques for working with others.  Fee is $15/person or Rock County Daycare Association free with membership.
The new Fall Luverne Community Education Brochure will be included in the  Sept. 14 Luverne Announcer (online on the school website on Sept. 16 also).
Outdoor Nature Explore Play Time for preschoolers on Sept. 17 and 19, Pickleball on Sept. 21, Yoga on Sept. 23, ECFE classes on Sept. 24, Running Fun on Sept. 27,  Cheer Camp on Sept. 27, Defensive Driving Refresher on Oct. 4, Cliffline Climbing on Oct. 5, Pottery Class on Oct. 5, and Living with Depression, A Personal Account on Oct. 7.
Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes have openings Tuesday evening for parents with children ages 0–5 years, Thursday morning for parents with children ages 1–2 years and Mondays at 8:30 a.m. for infants birth to walking.  Classes are held in the preschool rooms, giving children an opportunity for activities and parents time to explore topics relevant to child development for all ages.  Call 283-4724 for more details.
