Meetings
SWMN Habitat for Humanity Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Habitat office, 126 E. Main St., Luverne. Call 507-215-2091 for information.
Divorce Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the Centennial Room at St. Catherine.
The Caregivers Support Group will meet at Mary Jane Brown GSS in the conference room from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26. The program includes a short video related to caregiving and dementia. Anyone dealing with caregiving or who has questions in reference to caregiving or caregiver resources is encouraged to come.
Beaver Creek Township  monthly meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the township hall.
Al-Anon meets from 6:30 to  7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Buffalo Ridge Meeting Room (lower level) at the Sanford Medical Center in Luverne. Call Stephanie at 507-449-1246.

Mound Township Board meets at 7:30 p.m. the second Monday each month at the Rock County Highway Building, Luverne.
Beaver Creek Township monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.
Southwest Minnesota Habitat for Humanity meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Habitat Office located in the alley entrance of 126 East Main Street. Visitors are Welcome. ‘Book Your Winter Getaway’ reading program starts
“Book Your Winter Getaway,” the annual winter reading program sponsored by the Plum Creek Library System and its member libraries, began Jan. 2 and continues through March 31.
The annual winter program, open to ages 18 and older, rewards readers for doing what they love to do — read. Participation is simple: sign up at your local library, and pledge to read at least 12 books during the three-month program.
In Rock County, library patrons who complete the challenge will receive incentive prizes and individual libraries will be recognized for the number of new participants enrolled in the program and most books read throughout the three-month period.

No book donations to library
Due to the lack of space while the Rock County Library undergoes renovation, the Friends of the Library request that all book donations be held until the remodeling work is complete.
 
Quilt show underway at Carnegie
The quilts created by the Blue Mound Quilters are currently on display at the Carnegie Cultural Center through Feb. 6. The Carnegie is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
A reception is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.
 
Free community meal Jan. 27 at UMC
The United Methodist Church in Luverne will host a free community meal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the church.
 
Sign up for student driver education
Students attending eighth grade in the 2015-16 school year and older students can sign up for student driver education. Winter class begins in February and summer classes begin in June. Fee is due with registration. Call Luverne Community Education, 283-4724, with questions.
 
 
Rock County Community Library closed through Jan. 27
The Rock County Community Library will be closed for renovation through Wednesday, Jan. 27. After then a limited collection of library materials (books, DVDs, CDs) will be available for checkout. Wifi will be up and running; however, patrons will need to bring their own devices. There will be no computers or laptops available. Patrons may use their library cards at any of the 24 public Plum Creed Library locations including Edgerton, Pipestone, Worthington and Adrian.
 
Monthly Food Ministry
The New Life Celebration Church will sponsor the monthly food ministry at the Luverne Senior Center on Jan. 21. If you’re having trouble putting food on the table, come fro fresh produce, bread and meat. Children will be asked to wait outside.
 
Swim party for grades 6-8
Rock Youth in collaboration with Luverne Area Community Foundation and the Rock County and Pipestone/Rock Counties Collaborative will host a swim party Friday, Jan. 22, from 7 p.m. to 8:55 p.m. There is no cost, and snacks and drinks will be provided. Knights of Columbus free throw contest
The Knights of Columbus will host a free throw contest at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, in the Luverne Cardinal Gym. Register at the door. The event is free for ages 9–14 and is sponsored by St. Catherine’s Knights of Columbus.
 
County Fair Judges’ Training
There will be a free regional county fair judges’ training from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Wetland Management District office in Windom. Bring a sack lunch.
It will be a fun, hands-on evening learning the art of conference judging at county fairs. Topics will include quality judging experiences, project evaluation and ribbon standards. Participants will also participate in a mock conference judging session.

American Red Cross Blood Bank
The American Red Cross will be accepting blood donations from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Adrian High School, 415 Kentucky Avenue, Adrian, and on Monday, Feb. 1, from 1-7 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, 500 North Kniss Avenue, Luverne.
Download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-773-2767 to make an appointment or for more information.  A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals 17 years of age (16 with parental consent) weighing 110 pounds or more and in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
 
Sanford Hospice Charity Dinner ‘Kick-Off’
An organizational “kick-off” meeting is set for noon Friday, Jan. 29, at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne for anyone interested in helping with this year’s Hospice Charity Dinner and Auction fundraiser. New volunteers are needed to help collect donations, sell raffle tickets, put gift baskets together and help with facility set-up. Luverne hosts fifth/sixth-grade basketball tourney
Luverne Community Education will sponsor an invitational basketball tournament for grades 5-6 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams Saturday, Jan. 30. Each team will play at least two games in pool play format. Entry fee is $100 per team. Register online at www.isd2184.net under Community Education, or call 507-2833-4724.
 
Rock/Nobles Cattlemen’s Association banquet set for Feb. 1
The Rock/Nobles Cattlemen’s Association banquet will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne. Steaks will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Gary Sides, a beef cattle nutritionist with Zoetis, will speak on issues facing the beef industry today.
 
Free tax help available at library
Volunteers through AARP will provide free tax services at the Rock County Community Library in Luverne starting Feb. 8. Call the library, 449-5040, to make an appointment.
Appointments are required. Evening appointments are also available. Bring Social Security cards to appointments.
The service is free for any private individual with a simple tax format. It’s not for commercial, farming or investment taxes.
