Meetings
Rock County Rural Water Board monthly meeting has been moved from Aug. 8 to Aug. 15.
MS Support Group will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in the Southwest Health and Human Services in Luverne. All persons with MS, family and friends are invited. Call 283-2069 or 283-2964.
Thrivent Financial Board will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at The Bluestem.
Luverne Bowling Association will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at the Luverne Lanes. Leagues are available and all bowlers are welcome.
Grand Prairie Cemetery Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Grand Prairie Cemetery. In case of rain, the meeting will be in the back room of Orv and Sons Plumbing in Ellsworth.
Green Earth Players annual meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the Green Earth Players building at 401 W. Edgehill St., Luverne.

Hwy. 15 closed for bridge construction
Rock County Highway 15 (61st Street) will be closed 1 1/2 miles east of Kanaranzi for new bridge construction over Kanaranzi Creek. Construction will begin Tuesday, Aug. 9.
A signed detour will be in place during the 10 to 14 weeks of construction. For more information contact engineer Mark Sehr at 507-283-5010.
 
Museum closed for move to History Center
The Rock County Museum on North Freeman Avenue is now closed in order to move displays to the new History Center opening this fall in downtown Luverne. The Rock County Historical Society can still be reached at 283-2122 and at rcmuseum@gmail.com.
To volunteer help with the move, contact Historical Society President Betty Mann at 283-2913.
 
Luverne School District #2184 registration for 2016-2017 school year
New residents to Luverne School District #2184 should come to respective school offices and register students for school year 2016-2017.
The High School/Middle School Office is open for new students to register. Call 507-283-4491 to make an appointment for grades 6-12.
The Elementary Office is now open for new students to register. Parents of elementary students grades K-5 can call 507-283-4497.
School starts Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016.
 
LHS activities eligibility meeting Aug. 15
The Luverne High School Activities Eligibility Meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, in the Luverne Elementary School gym.
This is a mandatory meeting for students and their parents/guardians in grades 9-12 who plan to participate in Minnesota State High School League athletic activities during the 2016-17 school year.
Topics covered in the meeting include MSHSL rules and school policies.
A fall sports sign-up is available at the conclusion of the meeting.
 
Muffin Monday at The Oaks Aug. 15
The Oaks will host Muffin Monday from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at 203 Oak Drive, Luverne, for free muffins, coffee, and juice. Call Carrie, 283-1996, with questions.
 
Fifth-grade band summer lessons begin Aug. 15
Fifth-grade band summer lessons will run Monday, Aug. 15, through Thursday, Aug. 18, and again from Monday, Aug. 22, through Thursday, Aug. 25. All lessons will be in the high school band room.
The schedule will be as follows:
Flutes 1 p.m.; clarinets 1:30 p.m.; saxophones 2 p.m.; trumpets 2:30 p.m.; trombones 3 p.m.; French horns, baritones and tubas 3:30 p.m.; percussion 4 p.m.

Hinkly House summer night of music Aug. 18
Trumpeters David Nelson and Hans Bakken will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Hinkly House on North Freeman Avenue. The event is part of the Hinkly House Summer Night of Music series.
The Victorian period home is open from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays through the month of August.
 
Library book sale Aug. 18 and 19
The Adrian branch of the Plum Creek Library System has hundreds of books to sell.
The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 and Friday, Aug. 19, at the old coop building at the corner of Maine Avenue and First Street. Cash and checks only.
 
Parkinson’s disease seminar set for Aug. 19 at St. John
In an effort to raise public awareness and improve services for those with Parkinson’s disease in the Luverne area, a free seminar is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at St. John Lutheran Church, 803 N. Cedar Street, Luverne.
Rose Wichmann, manager of the Parkinson’s Center, and Joan Gardner RN, clinic supervisor, will provide an update on Parkinson’s disease symptoms, treatment and practical strategies for coping with common challenges. Call Dianne Karlstad at 507-530-3307 0r 507-283-4255 to register.
 
Monarch butterflies deadline Aug. 19
Anyone interested in applying for the Monarch Butterfly Habitat Development Project on private lands should contact the local NRCS District Conservationist, Kurt Halfmann, at 507-283-9146, Ext. 3, to submit an application by Aug. 19. 
 
Rock River Beer Fest Aug. 20
Rock River Beer Fest celebration of craft beers and regional wines will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Blue Mound Ice Arena, Luverne. The event features beer and wine samples, a home brew contest (enter by Aug. 12), local foods and a stein-holding contest sponsored by the Star Herald.

Wood sculpture exhibit through Aug. 19
Self-taught sculptor Fred Cogelow has his work on exhibit at the Brandenburg Gallery at 213 East Luverne Street in Luverne through Aug. 19.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 507-283-1884 with questions.

for caregivers
Respite care is available for caregivers who need a break to maintain their own physical and emotional health. Respite services provide temporary comfort, supervision and care for loved ones to give caregivers time for other responsibilities. Farmers Market open Thursdays
The Luverne Farmers Market is now open for business from 4-7 p.m. Thursdays at Redbird Field. Farmers Market continues Thursdays through October 26. Watch for the signs on Main Street.
 
Mah Jongg group meets Tuesdays at library
All ability levels (including beginners) are welcome to join in weekly games of Mah Jongg from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the Rock County Community Library.
