Meetings

Blue Mound Cemetery Association will have their annual potluck supper at the church at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Vienna Township Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Kenneth Community Center.

County Road 1 bridge open
Emergency bridge repairs were completed last week and opened County Road 1 to two-way traffic.
The bridge, located a half-mile west of the Rock/Nobles county line, is the highway to Ellsworth.
 
Sign up for soccer league, coaches needed
Soccer league for ages 4 through grade 4 (end of 2019 school year) begins Aug. 6 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Call Michelle Dekam at 227-6125 if you can coach. Training will be provided.
 
Register for defensive driving class
Save money on your car insurance premium if you are 55 or older by taking the 8-hour defensive driving class Aug. 13 and Aug. 20 through Luverne Community Education. Classes will be four hours each evening. Cost is $25. Register by calling 507-283-4724. (The office will be closed from July 19 through Aug. 9.)
 
American Legion Riders members visit Vets Home Aug. 2
Representatives of the Minnesota American Legion Riders will visit the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne around 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, to receive donations for the National American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund and visit with the veterans. The fund offers post-secondary education financial support to military children who have lost a parent on active duty or whose parent is disabled.
 
Carnival at Steen Reformed Aug. 7
The Steen Reformed Church will host its annual carnival from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the church. The carnival includes a meal, inflatables, games, cruise-in tractor and cycle show. Cost is a freewill offering with proceeds going to the Sunday  School.
 
Hinkly House dulcimer performance Aug. 8
Shirley Harrison and Harold Tilstra will perform Dulcimer Duo and More at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in the Hinkly House on North Freeman Avenue. The event is free but donations will be accepted for the Hinkly House preservation.
 
Register for AG Tech Day Aug. 14
At AG Tech Day Aug. 14 at Grand Prairie Events, participants will have access to experts skilled in better use of high speed broadband. Speaker Chip Flory, market analyst/AgriTalk radio host, and other experts will share technology resources.
A free lunch will be served, compliments of Rock County Pork Producers, Corn and Soybean Growers, Cattlemen, and Dairy Producers. Register online at www.isd2184.net under the Community Education link. (The Community Education office will be closed from July 19 through Aug. 9.)
The event is made possible through the Rock County Blandin Broadband Grant.
 
Free food Aug. 15
New Life Celebration Church will offer free produce, bread and meat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Generations building (former Senior Center) at 319 East Lincoln Street for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags and boxes. Call 283-4366.
 
Sign up by Aug. 19 to teach community ed classes
Community Education will be publishing the Fall Community Education catalog of offerings and is looking for instructors and/or class ideas for the period of the last two weeks of September and the months of October and November. Suggestions are due by Monday, Aug. 19, and can be submitted to Karen Willers at k.willers@isd2184.net or Cindy Arends at c.arends@isd2184.net or call 507-283-4724. Discovery Time has openings for fall
Openings in the Discovery Time Preschool are available for 3-4-year-olds in the MWF morning class and the T/Th afternoon class. Children who are 3 by Sept. 1, 2019, are eligible, and schohlarships are available if income guidelines can be met. Call Luverne Community Education at 507-283-4724 for more details. (Note: The office will be closed from July 19-Aug. 9.)
 
Free Medicare classes
Free classes for people who are new to Medicare are offered the second and third Mondays every month at the Minnesota River Area on Aging, 1939 Engebretson Ave., Slayton.
In the first class, participants will learn basics of Medicare and their options. The second class teaches how to research these options using non-biased tools, such as the Medicare website and Medicare Plan Finder Tool.

Suzuki Violin and Cello Lessons week of Aug. 5 for ages 4 to 10 and parent or adult. Fee is $85.
Guys and Dolls Guthrie Theatre bus trip is Aug. 24. Fee is $113.
Pottery Wheel Throwing for grades 9 through adult starts Aug. 5. Fee is $40 plus $10 for materials.
Art Camp for completed grades 4 through 6 will be Aug. 6, 7, 8. Fee is $25.
Little School House on the Prairie for completed grades 3 through adult is Aug. 12. Fee is $10 per person or $16 per adult-child pair.
