Meetings
Springwater Township Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the home of clerk Teresa Kramer.
Pink Ladies will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Luverne for a tour of the facility. The business meeting and lunch follow in the Blue Mound Room at Sanford Luverne hospital. Call Joan at 283-2597 with questions.
Vienna Township Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Kenneth Community Center.
Narcotics Anonymous meets at a new time: 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays in the basement of St. Catherine Catholic Rectory, 203 E. Brown St., Luverne. Use east door. Call 507-220-0137 with questions.
Hardwick Goal Seekers meet every Monday in Hardwick City Hall for the purpose of support and encouragement for weight loss journeys. Weigh-in begins at 6 p.m., and the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Call Glenda, 449-0568, with questions.
Women’s Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 8 p.m. Mondays in the United Methodist Church.
Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays in the United Methodist Church, Luverne. Call 605-321-4324.

Registration open for students new to Luverne district
New residents to Luverne School District #2184 should come to respective school offices and register students for the 2018-2019 school year.
The high school/middle school office is open for new students to register. To make an appointment to register for students in grades 6-12, call the middle school/high school office at 283-4491.
The elementary office will be open for new students to register starting Wednesday, Aug. 1. Parents of elementary students in grades K-5 can call 283-4497.
The new school year starts on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
 
Community Education seeks fall class instructors and ideas
Luverne Community Education invites the public to submit new class ideas for the fall or to contact them with a class that you would like to teach. The deadline for submission of ideas for the fall brochure is Wednesday, Aug. 1. Contact Karen Willers at k.willers@isd2184.net. The current Community Education brochure can be found online at www.isd2184.net under the Community Education link. Please note that the Community Education office is closed through July 27.
 
Bank Night movie ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Aug. 2
The free Bank Nite Disney movie, “A Wrinkle in Time,” rated PG, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.
Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants National Bank and Papik Motors, a free, family-friendly movie is shown on the first Thursday of every month as it was done for “Bank Nite” in the 1930s. A cash prize drawing will follow the movie. Must be present to win.
 
SWMN CEO event at Palace Aug. 4
The Southwest Minnesota chapter of Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (SWMN CEO) will host orientation for students participating in the SWMN CEO inaugural class this school year as well as their parents. The orientation will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Palace Theatre with break-out sessions at the Lord Grizzly Gallery. Mentors and financial supporters are encouraged to attend as well. Participating schools include Adrian, Edgerton Public, Ellsworth, Hills-Beaver Creek, Luverne, Pipetone and Southwest Christian.

Donate blood Aug. 6
The Community Blood Bank will host a blood drive Monday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sanford Luverne.  All blood types are in critical need, with all blood donated going to help the blood supply at Sanford Luverne. 
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health. Bring an I.D. Log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call Sanford Luverne at 507-283-2321. 
 
Hansen to speak at Pub Theology Aug. 6
Former NFL Pro-Bowler Brian Hansen will speak at Pub Theology at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the Take 16 Tap Room in Luverne. Hansen, an NFL player from 1984-1999, is currently the ministry director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in South Dakota.
Pub Theology is a Christian men’s ministry and Bible study group that meets each month to discuss topics of faith and life in a relaxed atmosphere. All men are welcome.
 
Steen Reformed carnival Aug. 8
The Steen Reformed Church will host their annual Carnival and Cruise-in for Christ Car, Tractor and Cycle Show from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the church. A pulled pork supper will be served.  To sign up car show entries, call Brad Bosch at 507-855-2284. 
 
Historical Society hosts ‘Life in Trenches’ World War 1 speaker Aug. 9
The Rock County Historical Society will sponsor Michael Eckers, noted speaker and historian, as he presents his program, “Life in the Trenches,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at the History Center in Luverne. His program deals with World War I before and after the United States entered the war.
 
LBA golf scrambler coming up Aug. 10
Luverne Basketball Association will host its fourth-annual four-person team golf scrambler Friday, Aug. 10, at the Luverne Country Club.
The event provides fun with family and friends while raising additional funds to support the Luverne Basketball Association.
Cost is $30 per person and includes nine holes of golf, golf cart rental and a meal.
Registration is at 4:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. shotgun start. The meal and awards ceremony follow the event.
 
‘Homestyle BBQ Social’ Aug. 14
The Luverne Senior Citizens will host a Homestyle Barbecue Social from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Luverne Senior Center.  The menu includes barbecue, baked beans, potato chips, pie and ice cream for $8 single or $10 double barbecue. The ice cream is donated by the Rock County American Dairy Association.
 
Free food Aug. 16
New Life Celebration Church will offer free food from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Luverne Senior Citizens Building on East Lincoln Street in Luverne for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own boxes and bags. Call 507-283-4366 with questions.
 
Drainage water demo Aug. 16
A Drainage Water Management Demonstration Tour will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the U of M Southwest Research and Outreach Center near Lamberton.
The research project is identifying strategies for achieving improved water quality in the Cottonwood Watershed. Strategies include edge-of-field bioreactors and constructed wetlands, in-stream ditches, and in-field cover cropping management.
