Salvation Army seeks volunteers to ring bells

The Salvation Army is in need of volunteer bell ringers to man the red kettle at Glen’s Food Center in December.

Every dollar collected in Rock County stays here and benefits organizations like Southwest Youth Services and disadvantaged children in the school system.

Santa Claus Day Dec. 10 in Hardwick

The Hardwick Community Club is conducting its annual Santa Claus Day Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Hardwick Legion Hall.

Events will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and include children’s crafts and cookie decorating.

Pictures with Santa will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

All activities are free.


Carnegie hosts Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees at the Carnegie Cultural Center is now open for the community’s enjoyment from 5-7 p.m. Thursdays and from 1-4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Doors will not be open on Christmas Eve day.


Choir concert Dec. 9

The Luverne Middle School and High School choirs will perform a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in the high school gymnasium. Admission is donation of a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation for the Food Shelf. Activity passes will also be accepted.


Blood Drive at H-BC Dec. 9

Children’s Fair Dec. 12

The Rock County Children’s Fair will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in the Luverne Elementary School Commons. The free event for children from birth to 5 years of age features interactive booths and Mr. Twister twisting balloons. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for photos.


Cattle Feeder Days Dec. 14

Dr. Sheri Bundy and Dr. Sean Montgomery, both of Corn Belt Livestock Services, will present information on feedlot assessments and the impact of feedlot environments on cattle performance at the 2016 Cattle Feeder Days event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne. Monthly Food Ministry Dec. 15

The Monthly Food Ministry, sponsored by New Life Celebration Church, will be from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Luverne Senior Center. Band concert Dec. 15

Sign up for Community Ed basketball tourney  Jan. 28

Luverne Community Education is sponsoring an invitational basketball tournament Saturday, Jan. 28, for both boys’ and girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade basketball teams. Format guarantees each team at least two games. Teams can register at under Community Education or call 507-283-4724. Cost is $125 per team, and payment must accompany registration.

Discovery Time Preschool has openings in the Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class. Register now. Early Learning Scholarships that cover the entire tuition for the year are available to qualifying families with 3- and 4-year-old children. Call 283-4724.

Families, daycares, and visitors are invited to play and learn in the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom. The classroom, designed for preschoolers to learn by discovery and exploration, is located on the southwest corner of school property. Engraved brick pavers line the path into the classroom and are sold to cover costs for upkeep and new materials. New residents — census information needed for preschool children: If you are new to the community, please call Community Education at 283-4724 with your family information for all children ages 0 up to kindergarten. The school district uses the information for planning purposes, mailing out flyers regarding school events, including the state-mandated preschool screening for all 3-year-old children living in Minnesota. If your child is 4 years old and has not been screened, please call 283-4724.  The screening should be completed prior to kindergarten.

Preschool Classes for ages 3 – 5 Years: Half day Preschool classes are offered during the school year for children who are 3 years of age up to Kindergarten age. Enrollments are accepted throughout the school year. Age is determined as of Sept. 1 of present school year. Free or reduced rates are available if income guidelines are met. Respite services provide temporary comfort, supervision and care for loved ones to give caregivers time for other responsibilities. Children in grades K-5 in the Luverne School District may enroll in FamilyU for after-school care. Snacks, games and activities, in and outdoor play and help with homework are provided. Priority is given to full-time students, but part-time openings may be available. Call 283-4724.

Help needed at the museum

Unable to shop or cook on your own?

Luverne Senior Dining prepares and serves nutritious meals every weekday and provides frozen meals for weekends. According to the Older Americans Act, senior citizens may contribute what they can afford for one meal per day up to seven days per week. Call 283-9846 for information and to make reservations.


Senior swim days

The Luverne Senior Citizen Center reminds area residents that the Rock County Pool and Fitness Center Senior swim times are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. Non-members pay $1.50.


Home delivered meals available to rural residents

Luverne Senior Dining and Nutrition Services Inc., Waseca, offers home delivered meals to local rural residents 60 or older or to disabled younger residents. Call Neva, 283-9846, to order or to volunteer delivery services. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed mileage.


Cash for Kids recycling program

Luverne Elementary School, along with Parents: Partners in Prevention, requests free support from the public in its Cash for Kids recycling program that receives cash for old cell phones, laser cartridges and inkjet printer cartridges. Place the used items in their original containers or in a resealable plastic bag and drop them off at participating businesses or at the elementary school. VA benefits available to Iraq veterans

Veterans recently discharged from combat operations can have free medical care for two years for conditions related to their service, regardless of income status. Call Rock County Veterans Services Officer Dave Haugom, 283-5061.


Medical equipment available to public

The Rock County Retired Senior Volunteers Office has medical equipment available for use free of charge. It’s the equipment that the VFW used to loan out. A $25 deposit, which is refunded upon return of the equipment, is required. Call Greta, 283-5064, to inquire.


Need help with prescriptions?

Senior LinkAge Line has staff and community volunteers available to assist individuals one-on-one in finding programs that may help them pay for prescription costs. The phone number is 1-800-333-2433. The LinkAge Line, a program of the Southwest Minnesota Area Agency on Aging, connects seniors to services such as transportation, in-home services, insurance and finances. Prescription assistance, however, is the most common reason for calling the LinkAge Line.
