Park hosts candlelight hike Jan. 13

The Blue Mounds State Park staff invites the public to participate in a candlelight hike from 6-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. The hike is a self-guided, self-paced 2-mile trail. Meet at the warming shelter for warm beverages and a fire. Weather conditions are variable, so bring warm winter clothes and sturdy boots.


Free dinner theater planned for Jan. 15

LPEP or Leaders Partnering to End Poverty is hosting “Poverty: What’s Your Baggage?” from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Grand Prairie Events in Luverne.

The free performance is a collaboration between the #Luv1LuvAll and the Green Earth Players. It is supported in part by the Blandin Foundation.

“Poverty: What’s Your Baggage?” explores how the issue of poverty impacts residents and how a community can remove assumptions to help move people out of poverty. Register by contacting ATLAS at 507-449-5777.  Child care and transportation assistance are available.

Blood drive at Grace Lutheran Jan. 22.

The Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors. A blood drive has been scheduled for 1-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Grace Lutheran Church, 500 N. Kniss Ave., Luverne.

Pork Producers annual banquet Jan. 22

The Rock County Pork Producers will host their annual banquet Monday, Jan. 22, at the Grand Prairie Events in Luverne. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and entertainment to follow. This year’s entertainer is Tim Harmston, a stand-up comedian. Tickets are $15 at the door. The public is welcome.


Public invited to Jan. 25 workshop on social media dangers

Nationally known author Alison Feigh of the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center will present “Forensic Aspects of Online and Social Media Usage” at Grand Prairie Events from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25.

Goal of the training session is to help participants understand why youth are susceptible to online and social media dangers and how to reduce their risk. Cost of the workshop is $50 and includes lunch. Continuing education credits are available. The event is partially funded with a grant from the Luverne Area Community  Foundation.


Fifth-sixth grade basketball tourney Jan. 27

Luverne Community Education is hosting a basketball tournament at the Luverne Elementary Cardinal Gym on Saturday, Jan. 27, for fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. All teams are guaranteed to play at least two games.

Sign up by Jan. 30 for Tai Ji Quan

Seniors are encouraged to improve their strength, flexibility and balance through a 12-week program of Tai Ji Quan through ACE Southwest Minnesota in the Luverne Senior Center. The class is adaptable to all levels of agility — including those with walkers or those who must sit. Sign up through Luverne Community Education, 283-4724. Cost is $75 for the twice weekly classes Feb. 6 through April 26.


Driver Education class begins Feb. 5

Students in the Luverne School District in grade 8 or above may sign up for a student driver education class to begin on Feb. 5.
