Greetings from the Tuff Memorial Home.
National Nursing Home Week was observed at the nursing home May 10 through May 16. The theme for the week was “Bring on the Fiesta.” The week was created in 1967 and always begins on Mother’s Day and continues through the following Saturday.
Events during the week included:
•Monday, May 11: The theme for the day was Dapper & Dazzle Day. Residents and staff were dressed in their best attire. The day began with a rousing game of Coconut Bowling in the activity room. The afternoon activity was the crowning of our new king, Harold Etrheim, and queen, Etta DeJongh. Following the coronation was a Mother’s Tea in the dining room with each female resident receiving a beautiful carnation.
•Tuesday, May 12: The theme was Tacky Tuesday. Residents and staff were dressed in attire not to impress and wore mismatched clothes. Activities during the day were mystery bingo, Bible study with our chaplain, Pastor Grant, and newspaper trivia.
•Wednesday, May 13: The theme was Be Bright & Smile. Residents and staff wore bright colors. Activities during the day were balloon bat, piñata fiesta and a photo booth. Residents enjoyed trying their luck in hitting the piñata and having their picture taken at the photo booth.
•Thursday, May 14: The theme was Mustache Day. Residents and staff wore anything with a mustache.  The activity department provided the mustaches. The activities for the day included the hula and chicken dances and team fiesta bingo. Instead of calling out bingo, participants were asked to say fiesta.
•Friday, May 15: The theme was Team Spirit Day. Residents and staff dressed in their favorite team/team color apparel or Tuff Home T-shirts. The activities for the day were rubber bands, maracas, staff and resident fashion show.
•Saturday, May 16: Residents enjoyed intergenerational bingo in the afternoon. We want to express our thanks to activity staff Karin Moser and her children for participating.
Two of our residents celebrated their birthdays this week. Our oldest resident, Martha Bakken, observed her 104th birthday May 12. Mina Sjaarda observed her 87th birthday May 15. We would like to wish Martha and Mina a very happy birthday and hope they enjoyed their special day.
Congratulations to the following staff who will be graduating from high school this month: Carey Taubert, Hattie Van Wyhe and Madison Fick from Hills-Beaver Creek, Abbie Bakker from Sioux Falls Christian, Vaughn Moser from West Lyon, and Joanna Westphal, Sabrina Hewitt and Ashton Meester from Luverne.
