It’s been five days since the “spring ahead” time change, and I am now just starting to adjust. Not sure why, but I struggle with the loss of an hour. Maybe it’s because I am a morning person and the added hour of darkness in the morning messes with me.
That said, the good certainly outweighs the bad with the time change. The past weekend reaffirms that warmer days are coming.
I saw my first robin over the weekend. Motorcycles and side-by-sides are on the roads again.
I know it’s only mid March and there is a better-than-even chance the ground will be white at least one more time before we can put the snow blower away for the year.
That said, there is a light at the end of the winter tunnel. Even tulips seem to be chomping on the bit a little early, popping out of the ground.
Unfortunately the skunks seem to be enjoying the earlier-than-normal warmer weather. Usually there are two signs of early skunk movement. On more than a couple of occasions this year, the night air has been a little offensive. Second, you may have noticed the words of Loudon Wainwright III’s famous song, “Dead Skunk in the Middle Of the Road” a lot more than in years past.
On the flip side of the offensive odor ledger is the very pleasant smell of backyard barbecues being fired up for the first time this year.
We are due for a nice spring for a change. For the past few years spring has been less than stellar.
The first day of spring is just a week away, so I hope your first day of spring is skunk-free, filled with numerous robin sightings, and enjoying a backyard barbecue with that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day.
