I don’t know if you know “The Johnny Appleseed Song” usually sung by church youth groups before they eat. It goes like this:

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like the sun and the rain and the apple tree.
The Lord is good to me
Let’s eat!

It all started the day I began chemo and radiation. The song sounded like this:

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like chemo and radio-ther-apy.
The Lord is good to me.

I’ve been inspired to add more verses:

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like carrot juice and brocc-o-li
The Lord is good to me.

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like the people in this com-mun-ity.
The Lord is good to me.

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me

The things I need
Like a sister who comes and cleans for me.
The Lord is good to me.

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like surgery and a colost-o-my.
The Lord is good to me.

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like the cat who sleeps on the couch with me.
The Lord is good to me.

Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like my granddaughters Evelyn and Ten-el-y
The Lord is good to me.

(Yesterday’s verse)
Oh, the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
Like nurses who take some blood out of me
The Lord is good to me.

Sometimes having a song stuck in your head is annoying; however, this one has been kind of fun.
(In case you are wondering, I probably won’t give up this column-writing gig to pursue song writing just yet.)
