God is our Rock

Built on a Rock

As a young boy, I encountered several trips with my grandparents. As we are now into spring, I can picture in my mind these excursions all the more. One of those trips was to the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. It has nine grottos and each one touches on a different point in the life of Jesus Christ.
While going through the grottos, I remember not being interested in the history and the stories as a young boy. All I can remember is running around with my younger brother Ryan from one grotto to another. Along the way, we went into the gift shop and I can recall our grandparents purchasing a container of rocks for both of us.
I still have that container of rocks to this day and they sit up on one of my bookshelves. From time to time, I will take a rock out and hold it tightly in my hand. In Psalm 31 it says, “Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me. You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.”
Daily you and I go through a ton of garbage, challenges and matters that weigh us down. Getting brought down to the deep abyss makes us wonder if we will ever be brought up again. However, it is exactly during these times that the psalmist cries out.  The psalmist here knows that they have a safe dwelling place of protection with God, a place where God will hold them tightly in the midst of everything and be that firm and solid foundation like any rock. As the psalmist cries out and places trust in God, we too cry out and place our trust in God as the psalm goes on to say, “You are indeed my rock.”
