The comedy duo of Marlene and Darlene (Green Earth Players starlette DJ Luethje and I) will take the stage at the Palace Theater at 2 and 7 p.m. Sun, Dec. 22, and we’d like you to come.
Every penny raised from the freewill admission goes toward the Generations, formerly the Luverne Senior Citizens, building fund.
We already have a $5,000 matching grant, so give generously and you will help turn $5,000 into $10,000.
The show is really just a bunch of mad-cap nonsense, silly one-liners, and poorly done Minnesota accents. But because DJ is a really good actress, it might not be too bad.
Joining Marlene and Darlene on stage will be George Bonnema playing the role of George Bonnema and Betty Mann starring as Betty Mann. Fresh off the set of “Footloose,” my nephew Jordan Winter will have a cameo as the magician, “The Amazing Jordo.” There are other actors, too, most of them from my church.
The plot is so thin you could use it to wrap a sandwich. The gist of it is, Marlene and Darlene move to Luverne (driving the Toyota from Leota) to become active in Luverne’s thriving senior community.
The sisters become caught up in the enthusiasm of fundraising for a new senior citizens center with Marlene offering her skills as a cheapskate.
The suggestion to rinse and reuse the Styrofoam plates at the Generations is met with a resounding, “no.”
The two eventually suggest that Luverne seniors  present “The Nutcracker” ballet because “People pay good money to see stuff like that.”
Dance tryouts end abruptly when Darlene observes, “We’d better stop before somebody needs an ambulance.”
The pressure to raise enough money to “Save Are Generations” builds as the show deadline nears and Marlene doesn’t really have a plan.
A health crisis puts Marlene in the hospital just days before the show and Darlene is left wondering what to do.
(I told you the plot was so thin you could use it to wrap a sandwich.)
If you’d like to learn how the show ends – I know I do – please join us for some really good laughs and Christmas cheer with everyone else who has nothing better to do on the Sunday before Christmas.
