A Christmas wish list in August

It may only be August, but I’ve decided to make a wish list.
Instead of a Christmas list, however, I’m writing a wish list for Luverne.
My guess is many local readers have found themselves saying, “I wish Luverne … ,” so I thought I’d turn my thoughts about that into a column.
Luverne already has many things that other small towns might wish for.
From the historic Palace and nice restaurants to new trails and a brewery, Luverne has many of the usual small town wants crossed off the list.
But there are still a few wants on my list.
Here they are, in classic Letterman-style “Top 6” reverse order. See how they compare to the items on your own Luverne wish list.
6. More Twin Cities TV stations. We are down to one Minnesota news station on my cable service. As a Minnesota taxpayer, sports fan and resident, I miss having more Twin Cities stations.
5. More or much larger convenience stores. If you’ve ever been to Casey’s or Teal’s Gas early morning or during lunch, you know why. Most towns our size have a much larger or two Casey’s. A new Kum and Go or Kwik Trip station would be even better.
4. A buyer for the Verne Drive-In Theater. Our drive-in is a true destination that we are very fortunate to have. It’s also for sale. My wish list includes a new buyer who will keep this historic amenity going for years to come.
3. An expanded community recreation center. I know this one’s a stretch, but I wish Luverne would expand the pool and fitness center in a big way to include multiple courts, a walking track, badminton, pickle ball, an indoor playground, climbing wall, and yes, why not, an outdoor water park. I know an expansion is in the planning stages. My wish would be for an expansion that makes Luverne a true destination for swimming, fitness and family activities.
2. A new retail development at the old Sharkee’s lot. Again, this is in the works. My wish list, though, includes a new Chinese buffet and a new local “Minnesota-style pizza” place. Think Smooky’s or Dar’s — thin crust, lots of toppings, not too much sauce and cut into squares. I bet many of you have replacements for China Inn and Smooky’s Pizza on your wish lists.
1. More appreciation for local leaders. My biggest wish is for more appreciation for the local leaders — elected, employee and volunteers in government, businesses and organizations that make Luverne successful. And there are many.
It’s easy to complain or write wish lists. It’s more effective to volunteer, shop locally or even run for office.
If we all work for what we wish for, our lists will get shorter and our town will remain vibrant.
So, what’s on your list?
