1922: Convention in Luverne is first such gathering conducted here
By
Betty Mann

The fourteenth annual convention of the W.C.T.U. District No. 5 will be held in this city commencing Saturday June 21st to continue three days.
Elaborate preparations have been made to make this the most notable event of its kind ever held in Luverne. A corps of able speakers will be in attendance the entire session; good music will be furnished and nothing will be found lacking to render the occasion one well worthy the presence and patronage of the public.
On Saturday evening at the M.E. Church the matrons’ medal contest will take place and for this entertainment the small admission of 10 cents will be charged. A notable feature of the program will be the address at the opera house on Sunday evening by Mrs. Bessie Laythe Scovell a lady of rare talent who needs no introduction to our people having addressed large audiences in this city before.
Donations to the Rock County Historical Society can be sent to the Rock County Historical Society, P.O. Box 741, Luverne, MN 56156.
Mann welcomes correspondence sent to mannmade@iw.net.
