How Great is God?

King David said, “Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.” (Psalm 145:3) King David also wrote, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Do you ever stop and think about how great God is?  The God described in the Bible as the one and only true God is far greater than words could ever describe.  Yet the Bible does give us some great descriptions that paint a picture, though somewhat blurry, of God.  Here is a bit of what the bible describes.
God is totally independent of anyone and everything. God made “the world and everything in it, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything.” (Acts 17:24-25)  God is not influenced by the necessity for something.   This time of year, we are influenced by the need of electricity. Because we want heat, we pay our bill. If you think you are independent of others stop and think about all the things that you get as a result of someone else. Food, water, electricity, gas, and the list goes on. God has no need.
God is unchanging. Wayne Grudem describes God’s unchangeableness as “God is unchanging in his being, perfections, purposes and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and he acts and feels differently in response to different situation.”
Consider what it means that God is unchanging?  The promises He has made He will keep.  Tomorrow you don’t need to worry that God will wake up with a different opinion, or a better idea.  How many things has science said this is the way it is and years later, changed their mind about what they said were the facts?  How many times have you changed your mind?   Since God is perfect there is no need for Him to change His mind.  He always makes and has made the right decision.
The Psalmist says “Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.  They will perish, buy you endure; they will all wear out like a garment.  You change them like raiment, and they pass away; but you are the same, and your years have no end. (Psalm 102:25-27).
What does it mean that God knows everything about everyone?  What does it mean that God has no limits on his power?  Or consider that God is attentive of your needs as well as the other 7 billion people living on the earth.  Consider that God has never sinned, never will sin, and will not even want to sin.  One day the eyes, hearts and minds of all believers will be open to understand who He is in all His greatness.  Believers will see Him face to face in heaven.
No one can measure the greatness of God.  What makes God so great to you?  Ponder His greatness today.
