Book of the Week begins at H-BC

By Lexi MooreMore than 90 children arrived at the elementary school on Wednesday to begin the summer Book-of-the-Week Club.The program, which started five years ago, gives students an opportunity for learning, adventure and fun involving children’s books.Children from newborns to sixth grade signed up for the program in the spring at a cost of $25. They meet for four Wednesdays in June and July.Activities for children include art projects, games, learning centers, computer programs and reader’s theater.With support of many local businesses, H-BC offers a scholarship program to families in the area. Sponsorship comes from the Rock County Family Services Collaborative, Exchange State Bank, Minnwest Bank and H-BC Community Education.In addition to sponsorship funds, H-BC Elementary Principal Todd Holthaus applies for grant money from area businesses. This year the club was awarded money from both Midwest Wireless Community Caring Program and Operation Round-Up Sioux Valley Energy."We are so pleased to partner with Midwest Wireless Community Caring Program. The partnership will truly assist us in making our community stronger from our youngest of residents to our oldest of residents," said Holthaus.The company gave the program $1,300 through its Community Caring Program, which provides resources to organizations and endeavors that effectively improve the lives of people in Midwest Wireless communities.Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis and are considered only through an application process.
